Season Over – At last!

A season that started with so much hope after the disappointment of Paris, ended with the same position as last year. scraping into the Champions League in 4th place. At least this season the Scum can’t moan about dodgy chefs, or whatever.

In August 06, Henry lead out a team full of expectation, new signings, Rosicky & Baptista raising our hopes, Cesc bound to make a great impression, Hleb with a season under his belt etc etc….. so much for expectations!

A season of what might have been, 2 wins over Man U, 12 goals in 3 games V Liverpool, 6 against Blackburn, 4 against Reading, the stuff of champions, unfortunately not. There were too many slip ups against mediocre sides, Fulham away, West Ham twice, Bolton away – out muscled and a lack of passion?

As Gooners, we’ve got used to the closed season, not spending any money, no big name signings and I don’t think the next couple of months are going to be any different – so what hope for 07-08? Probably a fight for a possible 2nd place or more likely 3rd? Clearly we are a more talented side than liverpool (despite their 2nd CL final appearance in 3 years) but have we got the experience to beat Man U and Chelski? we need a more potent strike force, a stronger defence and probably a bit more strength in the midfield, stronger wide players and a greater desire to score from all over the park – so not much then!!!!!!!!!

Yet again a season of hope, but this time my expectations are lower – sorry Arsenal, please prove me wrong.

  3. Sorry but i dont think we need wholesale changes, trust me the key is to keep TH14, RVP, Gallas and Rosicky fit for the whole season.

If we can possibly sign i think three more players in the shape of: Richards (£10 million), Malouda/Ribery (£7/£10-15 million) and Tevez (£???) we would have a very strong squad. Im not saying this is going to happen but if this did happen i believe we would be a force to be reckoned with, domestically and abroad.

    Lehmann/Fabianski

    Eboue/Richards, Toure/Djourou, Gallas/Senderos, Clichy/Traore

    Hleb/Theo, Fabregas/Denilson, Gilberto/Diaby, Rosicky/Malouda

    RVP/Bendtner Henry/Tevez

Now to make way for these signings Wenger has to be ruthless and he has been in the past. Flamini (£3million), Ljungberg (£5million), Aliadere (£3million), Reyes (£8million), Muamba (£2million). From this we have raised a total of £21 million. £10million for Richards, £7 million for Malouda and £4million left to go towards a fee for Carlos Tevez. Before people start telling me im not playing Championship Manager, i accept that fully and am only stating what i see as sensible approach to our transfer business.

  4. You make good points ElstreeGooner but one important factor you dont mention is our young lads will be one year older in experience and know how. The strike force will virtually have three new players in TH RVP and Bendtner who admittedly is untried in the Prem but surely cannot do any worse than the Beast, and also Theo to fill in if injuries occur. I feel Arsene will get a winger especially now that Reyes is not coming back as he has already hinted as much. If indeed he does buy i am sure it will not be super stars but players who can fit in with the Arsenal way. I feel we should be optimistic for next season as i feel if we can get off to a good start and score a load early on we can be competing as confidence will be high which is what happened to Utd this season albeit with the home loss to us early on. Lets all have some faith as im still convinced Arsene is the man to take us to that level. Cant wait till August!

  5. in: alves – to cover RB and RM (for when we flog hleb). babel – cheaper alternative to ribery ont LM. defoe – cos he has a cracking shot from outside the box (which we lack) and he can get into the 6yd box (which we lack). may be mavuba to replace the flamster.

out: senderos (the lump), flamini, ljungberg, reyes, baptista, aliadiaire, hleb (doesn’t score enough), and… a little contraversially – adebayor – cos we got enough strikers with bendtner and defoe…

    what joo reckon?

  9. Next season will be a totally different one. With van Persie, Henry and a more mature and confident Theo Walcott back we will be a contender for the title.

  10. If you look at our failings over the last two years I think the one key problem has been the fact we have not had a settled team.

This is because we have got rid of a lot of experienced and key players like Bergkamp and Pires and have not replaced them. Add to that the injuries and you should be able to see why we have not done it. You made a good point in that we have done well against the big clubs, but we have lost too many games against the lesser clubs. We need to win more games, score first, add the pressure and then score some more.

Having the big three back next year with a winger and perhaps playing Eboue as a winger could mean we get the goals to win games. I remember when we were winning things we have records for scoring in every game in a season, no losing away that sort of thing. That was achieved by scoring key goals and key times, at OT or at Craven Cottage a goal is a goal and win is a win and you get the same three points for each win.

If we keep injury free and add a bit of quality in a winger we should compete next season.

  11. It’s so long since we had a full strength squad, hopefully the start of the season will see a fit TH14, RVP, Rosiky and score a few early goals.
Where’s the Tevez rumour coming from? Do we really want him?
